Common questions

Everything you need to know about IELTS

What band score do I need for an Australian or UK university?

Australian universities typically require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate programmes and 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate, with no component below 6.0. UK universities follow similar requirements - top programmes at institutions like Manchester, Edinburgh, or Imperial often require 6.5 to 7.0 overall. Always check the specific requirement for your programme as scores vary by faculty and level.

How long does it take to improve my IELTS band score?

Most students improve by half a band to one full band within 4 to 8 weeks of regular, focused study. If you are aiming to jump two or more bands - for example from 5.5 to 7.5 - expect three to six months of consistent preparation. The fastest gains usually come from targeted work on Writing and Speaking, where examiner-level feedback makes the biggest difference.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

IELTS Academic is required for university admissions and professional registration. IELTS General Training is used for migration to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, and for work-based visas. The Listening and Speaking tests are identical - Reading and Writing differ in difficulty and task type. Make sure you are preparing for the right version before you start.

How is IELTS scored?

IELTS is scored on a 9-band scale. Each of the four skills - Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking - is scored separately. Your overall band score is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest 0.5. Writing and Speaking are marked by trained examiners against specific criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

Can I retake just one section of IELTS?

Yes - IELTS One Skill Retake allows you to resit just one section if you missed your target in only one area. This makes targeted preparation much more efficient: instead of preparing for the full exam again, you can focus entirely on the one section holding your score back.
