UBC International Scholars Program (University of British Columbia)
UBC’s flagship programme for international undergraduates who combine top grades and leadership with proven financial need. One application covers all four awards (Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow, Donald A. Wehrung, International Impact and Vantage One Excellence), and the amount is set by how much you need.
Application round
For 2027 entry the award application opened on 5 October 2026 and is due on 15 November 2026; submit your UBC admission application first, and your nominator and referee forms are due a few days before 15 November. Documents are due 31 January 2027, video interviews run January to March, and decisions come out by mid-April 2027.
The IELTS requirement
The awards use UBC's English Language Admission Standard rather than a score of their own: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no part below 6.0 in a single sitting (or TOEFL iBT 90 with 22/22/21/21). Official results must reach UBC Admissions by 31 January 2027, after the award deadline, so you can apply first and test in December or January. If you fall short you may still be considered for Vantage College and its Vantage One Excellence Award.

What it covers
- An award sized to your assessed financial need, renewable through your degree
- Vantage One Excellence Award: up to the full cost of the programme and living expenses for students who do not yet meet UBC’s English standard
- Automatic consideration for every award you qualify for
Who can apply
- Will study in Canada on a study permit
- Entering UBC directly from secondary school, graduated no earlier than June 2026, for a first undergraduate degree
- All As or the equivalent in your current studies
- Significant financial need, shown with official documents
- Nominated by a school official (nominator) plus a separate teacher referee; a school may nominate two students for UBC Vancouver or one for UBC Okanagan
- Not for Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor + Master of Management or dual degrees; no exceptions to the criteria
