Aalto University, Finland
Aalto University Excellence Scholarship (tuition fee waiver)
Aalto's merit scholarship for fee-paying master's students from outside the EU/EEA, including Thailand. It waives the whole tuition fee for the two-year master's; you still pay your own living costs, which Aalto puts at a minimum of EUR 800 a month. There is no separate form: you answer yes to the scholarship question in the admission application, and scholarships are decided together with admission.
Application round
The application period for master's programmes starting in autumn 2027 opens on 7 December 2026 at 09:00 Finnish time (14:00 in Thailand) and closes on 5 January 2027 at 15:00 Finnish time (20:00 in Thailand). All documents, including the English test score, must be uploaded by 12 January 2027 at 15:00 Finnish time. Scholarships cannot be requested before or after this period.
The IELTS requirement
Because the scholarship lives inside the admission application, Aalto's language requirement is effectively the scholarship's: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in writing (General Training is not accepted). Your result must reach Aalto by 12 January 2027 at 15:00 Finnish time, and tests taken before 7 December 2024 are too old for the 2027 round. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic (68, writing 61) and Cambridge C1 Advanced are also accepted, and an English-medium degree from certain countries can exempt you (Thailand isn't normally one of them).

What it covers
- The full tuition fee for the two-year master's (EUR 15,000 a year in business, EUR 17,000 in technology and multidisciplinary programmes, EUR 20,000 in art and architecture)
- Living costs, travel and insurance are not covered; Aalto estimates living costs at a minimum of EUR 800 a month
- A EUR 3,000 relocation grant (Pekka Mattila Excellence Scholarship) exists for two business programmes but can't be combined with the fee waiver
Who can apply
- A citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who is liable for tuition fees, which includes Thai citizens
- Applying for an English-taught master's programme at Aalto in the regular application period
- Merit-based and competitive; some programmes award none, and applicants admitted from the waiting list cannot receive one
- Request it in the admission application; applying for the scholarship does not affect your admission chances
- Scholarship decisions are made with admission decisions and cannot be appealed
