Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), Beppu, Japan
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) Tuition Reduction Scholarship
APU is a private university where half the students are international and every undergraduate programme can be taken in English. International applicants can ask for a tuition reduction as part of the admission application; awards are competitive and announced with the admission result, so this is the most accessible way for a Thai school-leaver to cut the cost of a Japanese degree.
Application round
Applicants living in Thailand use the Thailand schedule. For September 2027 entry, round THAFA1 is open from 29 October 2026 to 20 January 2027 and THAFA2 from 21 January to 3 March 2027, each closing at 23:59 Japan time (21:59 in Thailand), with results on 9 March and 20 April 2027. The last April 2027 round (THASP2) closed on 28 October 2026. Everything, including the scholarship essays and recommendation, is submitted through APU's online application system.
The IELTS requirement
The English score is part of the admission application, so you need IELTS 6.0 overall with no section below 5.5 (Academic; General Training is not accepted) by the application deadline. The test must be taken on or after 1 September 2024 for September 2027 entry. There is no separate score for the scholarship, but because it is competitive and judged on your whole file, a stronger result than the minimum helps.
