Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships
The University of Edinburgh's own PhD scholarships, open to international students in every subject. Nationality and finances aren't taken into account: awards are made on merit.
Application round
Deadlines for 2027–28 depend on the school, all at 23:59 UK time: Biological Sciences 16 November 2026, Informatics 30 November 2026, Astrophysics 4 January 2027, Chemistry 11 January, Engineering 14 January, other Physics 22 January, GeoSciences 25 January, Mathematics 1 February, and most humanities, social science, business, law and art schools 2 February 2027. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is still to be confirmed.
The IELTS requirement
The English requirement depends on your PhD programme, from IELTS 6.5 overall (5.5 in each component) up to 7.5 (7.5 in each). It must be IELTS Academic from a single test, no more than two years old when the programme starts. You can apply for the scholarship before you have your result, but upload it as soon as you can.

- Full tuition fees
- A living stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 a year at the 2026–27 rate)
- Funding for three to four years
Who can apply
- UK or international student starting a first year of on-campus PhD study in 2027–28
- Apply for your PhD place first
- Most schools then need a separate scholarship application in EUCLID through MyEd, and access can take up to five working days
- Informatics and Physics consider you automatically; Biological Sciences takes applications directly
