OeAD (Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation), funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research
Ernst Mach Grant - ASEA-UNINET (Austria)
Austria's grant for the ASEAN-European Academic University Network. The Full PhD Grant pays a monthly stipend for up to three years of doctoral study at an Austrian university. Only citizens of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam can apply.
Application round
The 2027/28 call opens on the scholarships.at portal on 15 September 2026. Full PhD and Postdoc applications close on 1 March 2027 at 23:59 CET (05:59 on 2 March in Thailand). PhD grantees must start by the 2028 summer semester.
The IELTS requirement
OeAD does not name an IELTS band. It asks for very good English at B2 or C1 depending on the doctoral programme, and the certificate must be no more than one year old when you apply, so you need a recent test result before the March deadline. In IELTS terms, B2 starts around 5.5-6.5 and C1 at about 7.0; aim for 6.5 or higher to be safe, and check what your Austrian host department expects.
