Franco-Thai Scholarship Program (Embassy of France in Thailand)
Each year the Embassy of France in Thailand funds a group of Thai students for a master's or PhD at a French university or grande école, in any field. Selection is on academic excellence, motivation and the study plan, with an interview for shortlisted candidates.
Application round
Applications are online only, through francothai-science.com. The 2026 call closed on 19 February 2026.
Next round
The 2027 call has not been announced yet. Recent calls opened in November or December and closed around the third week of February, so expect a similar window and have your university application under way by then.
The IELTS requirement
The scholarship sets no IELTS band. Language certificates are optional with the application, but the committee judges whether your French or English fits the programme, so a solid result helps. For English-taught master's programmes in France the course itself typically asks for around IELTS 6.5, and that is the score you'll need for admission. Laureates also take an intensive French course at Alliance Française Bangkok before leaving.
Where is your IELTS score now?
Your university sets the IELTS score for this scholarship. Take the free level test to get an estimated band for each skill before you apply.
What it covers
- A monthly allowance (the embassy call document gives up to EUR 860 for a master's and up to EUR 1,500 for a PhD, set by the committee)
- A return flight and French social security cover, with the status of a French government scholar (visa-fee and CVEC exemptions)
- Tuition isn't covered as such; some public master's and PhD programmes waive fees for government scholars
- Some awards are co-funded with a Thai university or partner, which then pays the allowance

- Applying for a full master's or PhD programme in France (exchanges and training courses are excluded)
