University of Melbourne
Graduate Research Scholarships (University of Melbourne)
The University of Melbourne's main scholarship for research degrees, open to international students. There is no scholarship form: apply for a PhD or master's by research by your faculty's closing date and you are ranked automatically on your last degree and research potential.
Application round
Closing dates belong to the course, not the scholarship, and differ by faculty. For 2027 starts, Engineering and IT closed round 2 on 11 October 2026 (later rounds to be confirmed), while Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences closes on 31 October 2026, 31 January 2027 and 15 May 2027. Scholarship outcomes follow about two months after each closing date.
The IELTS requirement
The scholarship has no English score of its own; you must meet your course's requirement, which for most graduate research courses is IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0 (TOEFL iBT 79 with Writing 21, Speaking 18, Reading 13, Listening 13). The test must be from the last 24 months and only complete applications are ranked, so have the result ready when you apply for the course.
