University of Alberta International Undergraduate Scholarships
The University of Alberta in Edmonton awards about C$53 million a year in undergraduate scholarships and support. International students are assessed automatically for admission-based awards when they get an offer, and can apply separately, by 10 January, for larger leadership-based awards including the President's International Distinction Scholarship.
Application round
Application-based awards (including the President's International Distinction Scholarship) close on 10 January; offers begin in early winter. Admission-based awards need no application and are decided when you receive your admission offer.
The IELTS requirement
None of these awards sets an English score of its own; you need to meet the University of Alberta's English requirement for admission, and the result goes in with your application. English-taught bachelor's degrees at Canadian universities commonly ask for around IELTS 6.5, so check the requirement for your programme and have the result ready before you apply.

What it covers
- International Admission Scholarship: up to C$10,000 based on admission average, no application needed
- Regional Excellence Scholarship: up to C$5,000 for top students from certain regions, no application needed
- President's International Distinction Scholarship: up to C$120,000 paid over four years, for 25 students a year, by application
- International Leader Scholarship: up to C$15,000 for well-rounded applicants with leadership roles, by application
- Chan Pang Kuen Memorial International Distinction Scholarship: up to C$120,000 over four years, by application
Who can apply
- Entering first year of an undergraduate degree on a student visa/study permit
- Admission-based awards: assessed on your admission average at the time of the offer; eligible students are contacted directly
- President's and Chan Pang Kuen awards: a superior admission average plus demonstrated leadership
- Application-based awards: you must first apply to an undergraduate degree, then submit the scholarship application by 10 January
