University of Sydney
University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS)
Sydney's competitive scholarship for international research students, awarded alongside the Research Training Program places. The tuition fee scholarship comes automatically with the stipend, so a USydIS covers the whole degree. Preference goes to new PhD applicants who have not held a similar award before.
Application round
For 2027 starts there are two rounds: research periods 1 and 2 closed on 11 September 2026 (outcomes from 10 November, finalised 17 December 2026); research periods 3 and 4 close on 18 December 2026, with outcomes from 26 February 2027 and finalised by 18 May 2027 for offshore applicants.
The IELTS requirement
USydIS has no score of its own, but your admission must be in by the scholarship deadline and the University's postgraduate standard is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (some faculties ask for more, so check the course page). Tests must be no more than two years old at course commencement and non-academic tests are not accepted. Plan to have the score before the round closes.
